BET Awards organizers ready for record turnout as artists prepare Jackson tributes

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The Shrine Auditorium became an entertainment epicenter Saturday, as performers and organizers prepared for the Sunday’s BET Awards show that’s being retooled as a tribute to Michael Jackson.

Black Entertainment Television modified its plans after learning of Jackson’s death Thursday. Artists quickly got on board.

Some changed their performances to honor Jackson, while others who hadn’t intended to attend changed their plans to participate in the first formal celebrity gathering since the passing of the King of Pop.

Here’s a peek into the preparations:

HILSON’S SALUTE: Keri Hilson and her eight backup dancers needed a little extra rehearsal time to perfect their routine, which was changed to honor Jackson.

The singer-songwriter, who is set to perform a medley of her hits “Turnin’ Me On” and “Knock You Down,” followed a trio of choreographers as she attempted to master the new moves.

The dazzling, dance-filled number starts with Hilson perched on a motorcycle in the middle of a dynamic stage filled with TV screens and neon lights.

It ends with Hilson and her dancers hitting Jackson-inspired moves and repeating his name.

Keri Hilson, Kid Cudi Plus FIVE Vie For BET Awards

he forthcoming BET Awards are full of veteran entertainers including Beyonce and T.I. but there are also seven new artists who will be vying for awards.

Leading the pack is “Knock You Down” singer Keri Hilson. First seen just over a year ago on Timbaland’s “The Way I Are,” Hilson has since become a Billboard chart-topping artist and forced to be reckoned with. Touring with both Lil Wayne and T.I, Hilson continues to snap up songwriting credits as she had previously done with Britney Spears and Ciara.

Hilson is not the only one who has stepped up from behind the booth to the mic. Next Selection/Universal star Ryan Leslie is close to picking up a BET Award or two for his self-titled debut.

Both Hilson and Leslie are nominated for Best New Artist, as is Jazmine Sullivan, Yung LA and Kid Cudi. But who will win or better yet.. who do you want to win ?

Earlier this month the fans and ultimate decision makers, who is deserving of Best New Artist. In an overwhelming vote, 63% said Keri Hilson, followed by Jazmine Sullivan (23%) and Kid Cudi (6%).

Hilson: ‘Scherzinger Was Forced To Return To Dolls’

Singer-songwriter KERI HILSON has accused music industry bosses of forcing NICOLE SCHERZINGER to abandon her solo career and return to the PUSSYCAT DOLLS. The band took a short hiatus following the success of their 2005 album PCD and Scherzinger began work on her own record, titled Her Name Is Nicole.  But the album was never released, and several of the tracks written for the project ended up being recorded for the latest Pussycat Dolls album, Doll Domination.
Scherzinger subsequently claimed it was her own decision to quit the project and focus on the band, but Hilson – who wrote a track for the solo album – insists industry bosses forced the singer back to the girl group.

She says, “I wrote Alienated, one of the songs on my album, for Nicole’s solo project. It was a good album but she decided to go back to the Dolls instead of releasing it, well she was kinda forced to I think.
“It was a good situation for me as I fell in love with that song, so I got to keep it.”
